Today lets talk about falling down, this has always been a hobby of mine, not an intentional hobby mind you but a hobby nevertheless. While subbing in classrooms from the kindergarten level to the eighth grade level this substitute teacher has found that falling down brings big laughs. Being a sub(as we will refer to my position going forward) is a wonderful job however you never truly know what situation you are going to be placed in. Are there behavior issues or certain medical needs? Will the teacher you have the privilege of subbing for leave detailed plans to follow and extra work to keep you from that incredibly eerie and awkward silence that leaves you screaming at the top of your lungs (in your head of course) WHAT DO I DO NOW!
Oops sorry this blogger went off on a tangent back to falling down(my strength) . Failing to take time to understand the layout of the room as you arrive at your new subbing assignment with large cup of coffee in hand can be disastrous. For example working with first graders this sub soon realized that a large world(also referred to as a globe) was attached to the top of the dry erase board at an angle parallel to the floor. Forgetting that my body was now apart of a strange alien land where my size is compared to that of a giant do to the small stature of my audience and all the miniature furniture in the room this inexperienced sub ran face first into the earth. While that alone should be enough to cause uncontrollable laughter from a group of eighteen munchkins my lumbering size nine Nunn Bush dress shoes decided to add insult to injury and trip over the cord that was strategically placed to allow the overhead projector to receive electrical power. This in turn caused to propel me forward and downward similar to a large oak tree being slung to the ground by a tremendous wind. The amount of hee hawing that was then forced out by this group of children was deafening. This sub is proud to report though the coffee was saved with skills a circus clown would find enviable.
The funny part however is that over the course of the day my picture was depicted in drawings and stories as the monster that crashed landed on our planet and had to to exterminated. A small and thoughtful child also explained to me that his daddy knew superheroes personally and from his vast experience my attempt to circumnavigate( not pronounced exactly the same from the mouth of a six year old) the globe was not good....not good at all.
